Chronic Sinusitis Treatment in Jacksonville FL

Chronic sinusitis is more than an occasional sinus infection. It is a persistent inflammatory condition that can interfere with your ability to breathe comfortably, sleep well, and enjoy your daily activities. Many patients experience ongoing nasal congestion, facial pressure, thick nasal drainage, diminished sense of smell, headaches, or recurrent sinus infections that continue despite multiple courses of antibiotics, nasal sprays, or other medications. When symptoms persist for 12 weeks or longer, a comprehensive evaluation is often necessary to determine the underlying cause and develop an effective treatment plan.

When patients come to me seeking chronic sinusitis treatment in Jacksonville FL, my first priority is identifying why their symptoms have become chronic. Chronic sinusitis can result from persistent inflammation, nasal polyps, allergies, anatomical abnormalities, impaired sinus drainage, or a combination of contributing factors. Because every patient’s condition is different, successful treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis rather than simply treating recurring symptoms.

As a board-certified otolaryngologist, I believe treatment should always begin with the least invasive option capable of providing meaningful relief. Depending on the cause and severity of your condition, this may include medical therapy, allergy management, nasal irrigation, or other conservative treatments. When these approaches are no longer effective, I may recommend advanced procedures such as balloon sinuplasty or endoscopic sinus surgery to restore healthy sinus drainage and provide long-term improvement. My goal is to recommend the treatment that offers the best outcome for your individual condition while helping you breathe more comfortably and reduce future sinus infections.

What Is Chronic Sinusitis?

Chronic sinusitis is a long-term inflammatory condition in which the lining of the sinuses remains swollen for 12 weeks or longer, despite appropriate medical treatment. As inflammation persists, the natural drainage pathways of the sinuses become narrowed or blocked, preventing mucus from draining normally. This creates an environment where bacteria, fungi, allergens, or ongoing inflammation can continue to trigger symptoms. When discussing chronic sinusitis treatment in Jacksonville FL, it is important to recognize that chronic sinusitis is rarely caused by a single factor. Instead, it often results from a combination of chronic inflammation, allergies, nasal polyps, immune disorders, anatomical abnormalities, or impaired sinus drainage.

Because chronic sinusitis can have several contributing causes, treatment should always begin with an accurate diagnosis rather than simply treating recurring symptoms. During your evaluation, I perform a thorough examination and review your medical history to determine what is driving your condition and which treatment approach is most likely to provide lasting relief.

Common symptoms of chronic sinusitis include:

  • Persistent nasal congestion or obstruction that makes breathing through the nose difficult.
  • Facial pressure, fullness, or pain around the cheeks, forehead, eyes, or between the eyes.
  • Thick nasal drainage or postnasal drip that may be clear, yellow, or green.
  • A reduced or complete loss of the sense of smell and, in some cases, taste.
  • Recurrent headaches, facial discomfort, fatigue, or a general feeling of not feeling well.
  • Chronic cough, throat irritation, bad breath, ear pressure, or disrupted sleep caused by ongoing sinus inflammation.

When evaluating patients seeking chronic sinusitis treatment in Jacksonville FL, I often use nasal endoscopy and, when appropriate, CT imaging to examine the sinus anatomy, measure the extent of inflammation, and identify structural problems such as nasal polyps, scar tissue, or a deviated septum. These diagnostic tools allow me to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and develop an individualized treatment plan that addresses the source of the problem rather than providing only temporary symptom relief.

Treatment Options for Chronic Sinusitis

Successful chronic sinusitis treatment in Jacksonville FL begins with identifying the underlying cause of your symptoms and selecting the least invasive treatment capable of restoring healthy sinus function. Because chronic sinusitis can result from persistent inflammation, bacterial infections, allergies, nasal polyps, or structural abnormalities, treatment is individualized rather than the same for every patient. My goal is to reduce inflammation, improve sinus drainage, relieve symptoms, and help prevent future flare-ups whenever possible.

For many patients, treatment begins with conservative medical therapies that are effective in controlling inflammation and promoting normal sinus drainage. Depending on your diagnosis, I may recommend one or more of the following:

  • Antibiotics when a bacterial sinus infection is confirmed or strongly suspected.
  • Intranasal corticosteroid sprays to reduce chronic inflammation and swelling within the nasal passages and sinuses.
  • Saline irrigations to remove mucus, allergens, bacteria, and other irritants while improving moisture within the nasal cavity.
  • Antihistamines when allergies contribute to chronic nasal inflammation and sinus congestion.
  • Short courses of oral corticosteroids for selected patients with significant inflammation or nasal polyps.
  • Allergy evaluation and treatment, including immunotherapy when allergies are a significant factor in ongoing sinus disease.

While many patients achieve significant improvement with medical therapy alone, others continue to experience persistent symptoms despite appropriate treatment. When that occurs, I perform a more comprehensive evaluation using nasal endoscopy and, when appropriate, CT imaging to determine whether an anatomical obstruction or more advanced sinus disease is preventing successful treatment. This allows me to identify the reason your symptoms continue rather than repeatedly treating the same inflammation or infection.

When conservative treatment is no longer providing adequate relief, I may recommend advanced procedures as part of your chronic sinusitis treatment in Jacksonville FL. Patients with isolated narrowing of the sinus openings may benefit from balloon sinuplasty, while those with more extensive inflammation, recurrent infections, nasal polyps, scar tissue, or structural abnormalities often achieve better long-term results with endoscopic sinus surgery. My recommendation is always based on the severity of your condition and the treatment that offers the greatest opportunity for durable, long-term improvement while avoiding unnecessary surgery whenever possible.

My recommendation is always based on the severity of your condition and the treatment that offers the greatest opportunity for durable, long-term improvement while avoiding unnecessary surgery whenever possible.

How Sinus Surgery Helps Chronic Sinusitis

When conservative therapies no longer provide lasting relief, surgery may become an important part of chronic sinusitis treatment in Jacksonville FL. The purpose of surgery is not simply to relieve symptoms temporarily, but to correct the underlying problems that prevent the sinuses from draining and functioning normally. Depending on your condition, this may involve removing nasal polyps, inflamed tissue, scar tissue, or other obstructions that block the natural sinus openings and contribute to chronic inflammation and recurrent infections.

One of the primary goals of endoscopic sinus surgery in Jacksonville is to restore normal ventilation and drainage throughout the sinus cavities. By carefully enlarging the natural drainage pathways and removing diseased tissue, I can improve mucus clearance, reduce chronic inflammation, and help interrupt the cycle of persistent infection. An additional benefit is that saline irrigations and topical medications are able to reach the sinus cavities more effectively after surgery, allowing ongoing medical therapy to play a greater role in maintaining long-term sinus health.

For many patients, surgery results in fewer sinus infections, improved nasal breathing, better sleep, less facial pressure, and a gradual return of the sense of smell. While no procedure can prevent every future sinus infection, addressing the structural and inflammatory causes of chronic sinusitis often provides significantly longer-lasting relief than medications alone can achieve in patients with advanced disease.

As part of my approach to chronic sinusitis treatment in Jacksonville FL, I perform surgery using high-definition endoscopic visualization and, when appropriate, advanced image-guided navigation technology. Every procedure is tailored to the patient’s individual anatomy, CT findings, and pattern of disease. My goal is to restore healthy sinus function using the least invasive approach that offers the greatest opportunity for durable, long-term improvement in both sinus health and overall quality of life.

I met with Nurse Practitioner, Laurie today on 4/14/26 for my ENT appointment and had an awesome visit. Laurie was so very patient, kind, reassuring, understanding, and professional. She provided the very same expertise and concerned care that I’ve grown to expect and appreciate with Snowden ENT. Laurie made me feel at ease and never rushed at any time during my appointment. She provided great insight into my ongoing treatment plan and suggested some very helpful additional options to adapt to my daily care plan. She was most informative concerning a future decision that I am presently weighing for possible Gerd Surgery after I requested her input. Her wisdom and encouragement in this area was very welcomed in order to help me make the right decision that will be best for me. So very blessed to be a patient of Dr. Snowden, Becky, and now, Laurie! Thank you all for providing the #1 ENT services in all of North Florida! With Grateful Appreciation, David L. Ashley, Patient

After undergoing two surgeries, Dr. Snowden performed my third surgery—and it was the first truly successful one. Thanks to his expertise, I regained some of my sense of smell and experienced significant relief that I hadn’t found before. After years of struggling, I finally felt like I could breathe and function better again. I’m incredibly grateful for the care, skill, and positive results Dr. Snowden provided.

I've been a patient for a few years, more recently due to a sinus infection and had Dr Snowden perform the surgery. I'm happy with the outcome. He was very understanding of all the challenges I had and worked with me to provide the best treatment plan. His staff is also very nice and very responsive.

I have been seeing Dr Snowden since 2014, and I could not be happier. He is always up to speed with the most current treatments, including brand new prescription options. My surgery outcome in 2014 was great, and he has helped me maintain a near symptom free lifestyle ever since.
