Posterior Nasal Nerve Ablation in Jacksonville

A Minimally Invasive Chronic Rhinitis Treatment in Jacksonville

Chronic rhinitis is one of the most common conditions I diagnose and treat in my practice, affecting patients with persistent nasal congestion, a constantly runny nose, postnasal drip, or frequent sneezing that often fails to improve with over-the-counter medications or prescription nasal sprays. While these symptoms may seem like a minor nuisance at first, they can gradually interfere with sleep, work, exercise, and overall quality of life. Patients seeking chronic rhinitis treatment in Jacksonville often discover that identifying the underlying cause is the key to achieving lasting relief.

As an otolaryngologist, my first priority is determining why your symptoms are occurring rather than simply treating them temporarily. Chronic rhinitis may result from allergies, non-allergic triggers, environmental irritants, medication use, or other nasal conditions that require different treatment approaches. A thorough evaluation allows me to develop a personalized treatment plan based on your diagnosis, symptom severity, and overall health.

My goal is to provide the most effective chronic rhinitis treatment in Jacksonville, beginning with conservative therapies whenever appropriate and progressing to advanced in-office procedures when symptoms persist despite medical management. Understanding the full range of available treatment options is the first step toward achieving long-term symptom relief and improving your quality of life.

Chronic Rhinitis Treatment in Jacksonville

What Is Chronic Rhinitis?

Chronic rhinitis is a condition characterized by ongoing inflammation or irritation of the nasal lining that persists for 12 weeks or longer. Unlike the temporary symptoms associated with a cold or seasonal illness, chronic rhinitis causes persistent nasal congestion, excessive mucus production, postnasal drip, sneezing, or a runny nose that often continues despite routine medical treatment. The severity of symptoms can fluctuate over time but frequently becomes a long-term source of discomfort if the underlying cause is not identified.

There are two primary forms of chronic rhinitis: allergic and non-allergic. Allergic rhinitis occurs when the immune system overreacts to allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mold, or pet dander. Non-allergic rhinitis is not caused by an immune response and may be triggered by irritants such as smoke, strong odors, weather changes, certain medications, spicy foods, or hormonal changes. Although the causes differ, both forms can produce similar symptoms and significantly affect a patient’s quality of life.

Determining the specific type of rhinitis is one of the most important steps in developing an effective treatment plan. As part of providing chronic rhinitis treatment in Jacksonville, I perform a comprehensive evaluation to identify the factors contributing to your symptoms. Once the underlying cause has been established, I can recommend the most appropriate medical therapy or, when indicated, advanced treatment options designed to provide longer-lasting symptom relief.

Symptoms of Chronic Rhinitis

The symptoms of chronic rhinitis often develop gradually and may become so persistent that many patients begin to accept them as part of everyday life. Unlike the temporary nasal symptoms associated with a cold, chronic rhinitis can interfere with normal breathing, restful sleep, concentration, and daily activities for months or even years. The severity of symptoms varies from person to person and may fluctuate depending on environmental exposures or underlying triggers.

Common symptoms of chronic rhinitis include:

  • Persistent nasal congestion or stuffiness
  • Constant runny nose
  • Excessive mucus production
  • Postnasal drip
  • Frequent throat clearing
  • Sneezing
  • Itching of the nose
  • Reduced sense of smell
  • Chronic cough caused by postnasal drainage
  • Sleep disturbances related to nasal obstruction

Many patients also experience secondary problems that develop because of ongoing nasal inflammation. Chronic mouth breathing, dry throat, snoring, interrupted sleep, and recurrent sinus infections may all be associated with untreated rhinitis. When symptoms persist despite appropriate medications or continue to affect your quality of life, it may be time to consider a more comprehensive evaluation. As part of my approach to chronic rhinitis treatment in Jacksonville, I focus on identifying both the underlying cause of your symptoms and the treatment option most likely to provide lasting relief.

As part of my approach to chronic rhinitis treatment in Jacksonville, I focus on identifying both the underlying cause of your symptoms and the treatment option most likely to provide lasting relief.

Diagnosing the Cause of Chronic Rhinitis

Effective treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis. Because many nasal conditions produce similar symptoms, it is important to determine whether your chronic rhinitis is caused by allergies, non-allergic triggers, structural abnormalities, chronic sinus disease, medication use, or a combination of factors. Patients seeking chronic rhinitis treatment in Jacksonville often benefit from a comprehensive evaluation that identifies the underlying cause rather than simply treating symptoms.

During your evaluation, I begin by reviewing your medical history, symptom pattern, environmental exposures, and any treatments you have previously tried. I then perform a thorough examination of your nose and upper airway. In many cases, nasal endoscopy provides a detailed view of the nasal passages, allowing me to evaluate inflammation, drainage, nasal polyps, turbinate enlargement, septal deviation, or other conditions that may be contributing to your symptoms. When appropriate, allergy testing or imaging studies may also be recommended to complete the diagnostic evaluation.

A thorough diagnosis is one of the most important steps in providing successful chronic rhinitis treatment in Jacksonville. Some patients achieve excellent symptom control with medications or allergy management, while others may benefit from advanced in-office procedures such as Posterior Nasal Nerve Ablation when excessive mucus production and chronic drainage continue despite appropriate medical therapy. My goal is to develop an individualized treatment plan that addresses the source of your symptoms and provides the greatest opportunity for long-term relief.

When Conservative Treatment Is No Longer Enough

Many patients experience meaningful improvement with medications, nasal sprays, saline irrigation, or allergy management. However, conservative therapy is not always enough to provide lasting symptom relief. If you continue to experience persistent nasal drainage, congestion, or postnasal drip despite following your treatment plan, it may be time to consider additional options. In some cases, medications become less effective over time or only control symptoms while they are being used, requiring long-term daily treatment without addressing the underlying problem.

As an ENT specialist, I evaluate whether ongoing symptoms are the result of uncontrolled allergies, non-allergic chronic rhinitis, structural nasal conditions, or overactive nerve signals that stimulate excessive mucus production. This evaluation helps determine whether continued medical therapy is appropriate or whether an in-office procedure may offer a better long-term solution. The decision is based on your diagnosis, symptom severity, medical history, and response to previous treatments.

When conservative measures no longer provide adequate relief, advanced treatment options may be appropriate. One of these is Posterior Nasal Nerve Ablation, a minimally invasive procedure designed to reduce the excessive nerve stimulation responsible for chronic nasal drainage in carefully selected patients. If I determine that this approach is appropriate for your condition, I discuss the expected benefits, potential risks, and recovery process so you can make an informed treatment decision. My goal is always to recommend the most effective chronic rhinitis treatment in Jacksonville based on your individual needs rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.

Advanced Chronic Rhinitis Treatment Options

When chronic rhinitis continues to affect your quality of life despite appropriate medical therapy, advanced treatment options may provide more durable symptom relief. These procedures are typically considered for patients whose symptoms persist after conservative measures such as nasal sprays, antihistamines, saline irrigation, or allergy management have failed to adequately control excessive nasal drainage or congestion. The most appropriate treatment depends on the underlying cause of your symptoms and the findings of your examination.

One of the most significant advances in the treatment of chronic rhinitis is Posterior Nasal Nerve Ablation, (PNN Ablation). This minimally invasive, in-office procedure targets the small nerves responsible for stimulating excessive mucus production. By reducing these nerve signals, many patients experience meaningful improvement in chronic runny nose, postnasal drip, and other symptoms associated with non-allergic chronic rhinitis. I discuss this procedure in greater detail on my Posterior Nasal Nerve Ablation in Jacksonville page, including how it is performed, who may benefit, and what patients can expect during recovery.

Other advanced treatment options may also be appropriate depending on your diagnosis. Cryotherapy, commonly known by the brand name ClariFix®, and radiofrequency treatment are both designed to reduce overactive nerve signaling to the nasal lining using different treatment technologies. Some patients may also require treatment for contributing conditions such as enlarged turbinates, nasal polyps, chronic sinus disease, or a deviated nasal septum. My goal is to recommend the treatment that best addresses the underlying cause of your symptoms and provides the most effective chronic rhinitis treatment in Jacksonville for your individual situation.

Choosing the Right Chronic Rhinitis Treatment

There is no single treatment that is appropriate for every patient with chronic rhinitis. Selecting the most effective approach requires a careful evaluation of your symptoms, medical history, physical examination, and the factors contributing to your condition. Because chronic rhinitis can result from allergies, environmental irritants, overactive nasal nerves, or structural abnormalities within the nose, successful chronic rhinitis treatment in Jacksonville should always be individualized rather than based on symptoms alone.

When developing your treatment plan, I consider several important factors, including how long your symptoms have been present, the severity of your nasal congestion or drainage, your response to previous medications, and the impact your symptoms have on your daily activities. I also evaluate whether additional nasal conditions, such as turbinate enlargement, chronic sinus disease, or a deviated septum, may be contributing to your symptoms. This comprehensive evaluation helps ensure that treatment addresses the underlying cause rather than simply providing temporary symptom relief.

My goal is to provide every patient with the most appropriate chronic rhinitis treatment in Jacksonville, beginning with the least invasive options whenever possible. If conservative therapies provide adequate relief, additional procedures may not be necessary. However, when symptoms persist despite appropriate medical management, I may recommend advanced in-office treatments such as Posterior Nasal Nerve Ablation or other procedures that are better suited to your specific diagnosis. By tailoring treatment to each patient’s individual needs, I can help maximize long-term symptom improvement and overall quality of life.

I met with Nurse Practitioner, Laurie today on 4/14/26 for my ENT appointment and had an awesome visit. Laurie was so very patient, kind, reassuring, understanding, and professional. She provided the very same expertise and concerned care that I’ve grown to expect and appreciate with Snowden ENT. Laurie made me feel at ease and never rushed at any time during my appointment. She provided great insight into my ongoing treatment plan and suggested some very helpful additional options to adapt to my daily care plan. She was most informative concerning a future decision that I am presently weighing for possible Gerd Surgery after I requested her input. Her wisdom and encouragement in this area was very welcomed in order to help me make the right decision that will be best for me. So very blessed to be a patient of Dr. Snowden, Becky, and now, Laurie! Thank you all for providing the #1 ENT services in all of North Florida! With Grateful Appreciation, David L. Ashley, Patient

Snowden ENT doesn’t disappoint! I had sinus surgery a few years ago and Dr Snowden did a terrific job! His PA, Becky Hale is knowledgeable and quite personable. I would highly recommend!

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Snowden since 2014, and my experience has been life-changing. After undergoing two surgeries, Dr. Snowden performed my third surgery—and it was the first truly successful one. Thanks to his expertise, I regained some of my sense of smell and experienced significant relief that I hadn’t found before. After years of struggling, I finally felt like I could breathe and function better again. I’m incredibly grateful for the care, skill, and positive results Dr. Snowden provided.

I've been a patient for a few years, more recently due to a sinus infection and had Dr Snowden perform the surgery. I'm happy with the outcome. He was very understanding of all the challenges I had and worked with me to provide the best treatment plan. His staff is also very nice and very responsive.

I have been seeing Dr Snowden since 2014, and I could not be happier. He is always up to speed with the most current treatments, including brand new prescription options. My surgery outcome in 2014 was great, and he has helped me maintain a near symptom free lifestyle ever since.
